The WI DATCP has released a new testing requirement in an effort to prevent the spread of the avian influenza (HPAI) (H5N1) in dairy cattle for the movement of lactating dairy cattle to fairs and shows starting Wednesday, June 19. This will affect many of our District Shows.

Please be aware that any lactating dairy cattle brought to a WHA District Show after June 19 will be required to present a copy of a negative test for Influenza A virus from an approved National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) laboratory with samples collected no more than 7 days prior to movement to the fair or exhibition. This testing is available to producers at no cost through USDA APHIS at NAHLN laboratories. Producers may also apply for reimbursement of shipping and veterinary fees for collection of samples. This intrastate order requiring a negative Influenza A test prior to traveling to a show or exhibition will remain in effect until 60 days after the last detection of H5N1 in cattle herds in the United States.

Sample collection for testing must meet all of the following:

(1)  The sample type to be collected is milk or udder secretions from individual cows. Each quarter is sampled and combined into one sample for submission to the laboratory. Submissions must be between 3 to 10 milliliters per animal.

(2)  The sample must be collected by or under the supervision of a licensed and accredited veterinarian.

(3)  Sample collection and testing must take place no more than 7 days prior to movement to the fair or exhibition.

Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (WVDL) is where most of Wisconsin’s samples go, there are other NAHLN laboratories. WVDL is advising to plan for a 72 hour turn around, although it is sometimes quicker than that. Submission instructions for veterinarians are on their website or they can be reached by phone 800-608-8387 or 608-262-5432.

We will also be recommending to the District Show host counties to provide disinfectant in the milking parlors at the show for exhibitors to disinfect milking units between each cow and exhibitors are encouraged to bring their own teat dip cups to avoid cross-contamination.

While there are no reported cases of avian influenza in Wisconsin, we want to ensure that preventative measures are implemented. Each show will be expected to follow DATCP testing requirements for lactating animals and we encourage all exhibitors to follow standard biosecurity recommendations for shows.

INFORMATION ON REgistrations with Holstein Association USA

Attention District Show exhibitors:

With the recent system outage at Holstein USA, we know that there are some questions in regards to registration papers for the upcoming District Shows. We’ve been told Holstein USA staff is working overtime to get caught up on registrations that have been submitted. There are a few things you can do as an exhibitor to get your registration paper before the show.

I’ve submitted my application but have not received the paper. What should I do?

A:  You can contact customer service at Holstein USA (email info@holstein.com or call 1-800-952-5200) to check on the status of your application. From what we understand, they are able to push through one or two applications in order to meet show deadlines. Please ask for a copy of the paper to be emailed to you in case the hard copy does not come in the mail in time.

What if my animal’s registration has been processed but I don’t have a paper in hand?

A: Again, we encourage you to email or call HAUSA customer service to get an emailed copy, but if your animal is tag ID’d and she appears in animal search on the Holstein website, we will accept that at District Shows for this year only.

I submitted a transfer OR bought an animal this spring but have not received the paper back yet. What should I do?

A: Email or call HAUSA customer service to get the transfer completed and ask for a copy to be emailed. You may also need to contact sale management to see if they have submitted the transfers to Holstein.

I did my transfer online but don’t have an updated paper. What should I do?

A: If you did the transfer online and have the paper in hand, please print a copy of your transfer confirmation and bring with the original registration paper to the show. We can also confirm transfers via animal search on the Holstein USA website.

We will do our best to accommodate our exhibitors with animals that have been registered but do not have papers in hand, but it is important for everyone to make an effort to get applications processed before your show. Holstein USA customer service will help with registration applications that need to be completed – but please call far enough in advance to give them time to find and process the applications.

Please note that if check-in for your show is on a weekend or Friday afternoon, we will not be able to work with HAUSA customer service to solve any problems since it is not during business hours. We encourage exhibitors to contact HAUSA customer service as soon as possible to avoid any last minute issues.
